Nibiru is a theoretical 12th Planet, often called Planet X, that was conceived by researcher and author Zecharia Sitchin. The planet supposedly inhabits a 3600 year orbit in close to 1 parsec away from the sun.
What is legitimately appealing about Nibiru, or the understanding of it, is that Zecharia claims that its collision with other planet, Tiamat seeded some of our smaller terrestrial planets. Tiamat was supposedly settled in the middle of Mars and Jupiter, and upon its collision, it created the Earth, the Moon, and the asteroid belt.

Sitchin and his supporters have claimed that Nibiru is returning to the interior of the solar system, and will come close to Earth (or perhaps collide) on December 21st, 2012. This date is also significant, because it marks the end of the Mayan Calendar, as well as an increased inventory of solar activity. More than a few habitancy believe that this is what will happen, and have formed cults as a result.
The truth behind whether Nibiru's existence is shrouded. On one hand, we have the claims of a marginalized researcher, who is often shouted down by the masses, who claims to have proof of what the arrival of Nibiru. It would seem much in the same way as looking a man on the road retention a sign, "The End is Nigh".
However, at the same time, we have a very real and pervasive government entity, which has every motivation to keep an impending doomsday scenario from the American Public. While, Nibiru may not exist, there may be a deeper bit to this than they are telling us.
