Use Your Brain to Remember Your List Next Time You Go to the Grocery Store

What memory gadget will store (with the allowable training) an roughly endless number of data? The reply of policy is your brain, your built-in free computer. This being the case, why is it that when you go to the grocery store, you take up pencil and paper and write all the items down. Then you take the petite piece of paper with you to the grocery store. Why not train your brain to remember the list, so you don't need to waste the paper or ink. You are also exercising your brain cells, which is good for you. Your brain needs exercise just like all the other parts of your body. I learned a straightforward theory many years ago from a "memory expert" who appeared at a high school convocation. Too bad he didn't get us to memorize his name because I have forgotten it (well. It's been along long time ago). The method in a nutshell was to link all the items on the list to each other in the form of a short 1 or 2 sentence story. Once you learn to do this just think of the other ways, also remembering grocery lists, you could use what you learned. You could use it for example to: memorize a speech, memorize foremost dates before the next history exam, remember your lines in the play you are acting in, and on and on.

To use this method all you need to associate the words with each other to form a "chain of words." (like a sentence). To do the relationship you need to make the relationship as silly and ridiculous as possible. For example to keep it straightforward let's take a short list of only 5 items. Let's say your list of 5 grocery items is: cheese, milk, bread, tomato soup, and coffee. One straightforward ridiculous way would be: photograph in your mind dipping a piece of cheese in a glass of milk, then putting it on a piece of bread, then dipping the whole thing in a bowl of tomato soup sitting next to a cup of coffee. The thinking photograph is easy to remember and once you get to the store you simply unravel the scene into a series of words (the items you wanted to remember).

To expand this to a list of 10 items you could then take the last 5 items and make up a silly scene with them, then review this scene with the first. For example if the second list is carrots, lettuce, apples, oranges and salt you could photograph the following: You use the carrot like a skewer and poke it through the head of lettuce into the apple, then the orange, and then you use a salt shaker and salt the whole thing. To link the 2 lists you could fantasize a backyard barbeque that starts with the cheese dipped in milk on the bread dipped in tomato soup sitting next to the coffee, then a skewer ready to barbeque with a carrot skewer sticking though an apple and an orange, and being salted. Try this method next trip to the grocery store. It's simple, wireless, costs nothing, and doesn't need a piece of paper.
